Chicken Tender Sandwich

September 5, 2026 by khadaraliadan Leave a Comment

Chicken Tender Sandwich is the kind of lunch I reach for when I want something crispy and filling without making a complicated meal. A crunchy chicken tender tucked into a soft bun with fresh lettuce and a creamy sauce is hard to beat.

I like keeping the toppings simple because the chicken is the main attraction. A little shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, and a good sauce are usually all I need.

The chicken gets a golden panko coating and stays juicy inside. You can bake or air fry the tenders, so there is no need to stand over a skillet of hot oil.

For me, the sauce makes the sandwich. Ranch, honey mustard, or a spicy mayo all work, so you can easily change the flavor depending on what you’re craving.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

Chicken Tender Sandwich is crispy, juicy, and easy to customize. The crunchy chicken works perfectly with a soft toasted bun, fresh vegetables, and a creamy sauce.

You can make the chicken from scratch or use leftover chicken tenders when you have them. It is also easy to adjust the toppings for kids or adults.

The recipe keeps the ingredient list short while still giving you plenty of flavor. Once the chicken is cooked, the sandwich only takes a few minutes to assemble.

Ingredients for Chicken Tender Sandwich

For the Chicken Tenders

  • 1 pound chicken tenders, or chicken breast cut into strips.
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs, for a crispy coating.
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, for coating.
  • 1 egg, beaten.
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika, for color and flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, for savory flavor.
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, for brushing or spraying.

For the Sandwiches

  • 4 soft sandwich buns, brioche or regular hamburger buns both work.
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce, for crunch.
  • 1 tomato, thinly sliced.
  • 1/4 cup ranch or honey mustard, for the sauce.
  • Pickles, optional.

How to Make Chicken Tender Sandwich

  • Prepare the chicken. If you’re using chicken breasts, cut them into strips that are similar in size so they cook evenly. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels before coating it because excess moisture can make the breading less crisp.
  • Set up the coating. Place the flour in one shallow bowl and the beaten egg in a second bowl. In a third bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper so the coating is seasoned throughout.
  • Coat the chicken. Dip each chicken strip into the flour and shake off any excess. Move it into the beaten egg, making sure all sides are coated, then press it into the seasoned panko so the breadcrumbs stick firmly to the chicken.
  • Preheat the oven. Heat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it. Place a wire rack on the sheet if you have one, as this allows hot air to circulate around the chicken and helps the coating become crisp.
  • Prepare the tenders for baking. Arrange the coated chicken strips on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each piece. Lightly spray or brush the tops with olive oil so the panko develops a golden color as it cooks.
  • Bake the chicken. Bake for about 18–22 minutes, turning the tenders halfway through if they are directly on the baking sheet. Continue cooking until the coating is golden and the chicken is cooked through.
  • Check the chicken. Use a food thermometer to make sure the thickest part of the chicken reaches 165°F. If the coating looks crisp but the chicken needs more time, return it to the oven for a few additional minutes.
  • Prepare the toppings. While the chicken is cooking, shred the lettuce and slice the tomato. If you’re using pickles, slice them thinly so they fit neatly inside the sandwich without making the bun difficult to close.
  • Toast the buns. Cut the buns open and place them cut-side up in a dry skillet or on a baking sheet. Toast them for a few minutes until the edges are lightly golden, being careful not to let them become too hard.
  • Add the sauce. Spread ranch, honey mustard, or another favorite sauce over the cut sides of the buns. A generous but even layer of sauce adds moisture and balances the crispy chicken without making the sandwich messy.
  • Build the sandwich. Place shredded lettuce and tomato on the bottom bun, then add one or two chicken tenders depending on their size. Add pickles if you’re using them, then place the top bun over the chicken.
  • Serve immediately. Cut the sandwich in half if you like and serve it while the chicken is still hot and crisp. Keep extra sauce on the side for dipping because it is always useful with crispy chicken.

What to Serve Chicken Tender Sandwich

Chicken Tender Sandwiches pair naturally with crispy fries or potato wedges. The crunchy potatoes and chicken make a classic combination, especially with ranch, barbecue sauce, or honey mustard for dipping.

For a lighter meal, serve the sandwich with a simple green salad, coleslaw, or fresh fruit. A cucumber and tomato salad also works well when you want something fresh alongside the crispy chicken.

You can also turn the meal into a casual sandwich bar by putting out pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and several sauces. Everyone can build their sandwich the way they like, which makes this especially handy for family meals.

How to Store and Reheat Chicken Tender Sandwich

Store leftover chicken tenders separately from the buns and fresh toppings in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Keeping everything separate is important because lettuce, tomato, and sauce can make the bun soggy.

To reheat the chicken, place the tenders in a 375°F oven or air fryer for about 5–10 minutes until hot and crisp again. Avoid reheating the fully assembled sandwich because the bread will become soft and the fresh toppings will lose their texture.

Toast a fresh bun, add fresh lettuce and tomato, and spread on your sauce just before serving. This gives leftover chicken tenders the texture of a freshly made sandwich.
