Marry Me Chicken Casserole

September 6, 2026 by kadr Leave a Comment

Marry Me Chicken Casserole takes everything I like about classic Marry Me Chicken and turns it into a cozy, scoopable dinner. You get tender chicken, a creamy Parmesan sauce, and little pieces of sun-dried tomato throughout the dish.

I usually reach for this when I want something that feels a little special but still works for a regular family dinner. Instead of cooking everything separately, you build the sauce, add the chicken, and let the casserole finish in the oven.

The creamy sauce is the part that really brings everything together. The Parmesan gives it a rich, savory flavor, while the sun-dried tomatoes add little bursts of sweetness and acidity that keep the sauce from tasting too heavy.

It also makes a great make-ahead meal. You can prepare most of it earlier in the day, then bake it when you’re ready for dinner.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

This casserole has that comforting combination of creamy sauce, tender chicken, Parmesan, and sun-dried tomatoes without requiring a long ingredient list. The chicken stays juicy because it finishes cooking in the sauce rather than being baked dry on its own.

Another thing I like is how flexible it is. You can serve it with vegetables, pasta, rice, or crusty bread depending on what you have in the kitchen. The sauce is rich enough to make simple sides taste much more interesting.

The recipe also gives you a good amount of sauce, which is important for a casserole. You want every spoonful to have chicken coated in that creamy, savory mixture rather than ending up with a dry dish.

Ingredients for Marry Me Chicken Casserole

For the Chicken

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts: Cut these into bite-sized pieces so they cook evenly and are easy to scoop from the casserole.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning: Gives the chicken a simple blend of herbs without needing several separate dried herbs.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt: Seasons the chicken and helps bring out its natural flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper: Adds mild heat and balances the creamy sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil: Used for browning the chicken before it goes into the casserole.

For the Creamy Sauce

  • 2 cloves garlic: Fresh garlic adds a savory base to the sauce and works especially well with the Parmesan and sun-dried tomatoes.
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth: Loosens the sauce and gives it extra savory flavor without making it too thick.
  • 1 cup heavy cream: Creates the rich, creamy texture that makes this casserole taste like Marry Me Chicken.
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese: Melts into the sauce and gives it a salty, nutty flavor while helping the sauce thicken.
  • 1/3 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes: These bring sweetness, tang, and a concentrated tomato flavor throughout the casserole.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning: Adds another layer of herb flavor to the creamy sauce.
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes: Gives the sauce a small amount of heat. You can leave them out if you prefer a milder casserole.

For Finishing

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella: Melts over the top and gives the casserole a golden, cheesy finish.
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil: Adds a fresh contrast to the rich sauce and makes the finished casserole taste brighter.

How to Make Marry Me Chicken Casserole

  • Prepare the chicken: Cut the chicken breasts into small, even pieces so they cook at the same rate. Pat them dry with paper towels, then season them with Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper, making sure the seasoning coats the pieces evenly.
  • Brown the chicken: Heat the olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken in a single layer and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, just until the outside is lightly golden. The chicken does not need to be fully cooked at this point because it will finish cooking in the oven. Transfer it to a plate for now.
  • Cook the garlic: Lower the heat to medium and add the minced garlic to the same skillet. Cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly, until the garlic becomes fragrant. Be careful not to let it brown too much because burnt garlic can make the creamy sauce taste bitter.
  • Build the sauce: Pour in the chicken broth and use a wooden spoon to scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Let the broth simmer for about 1 minute, then pour in the heavy cream and stir until everything is combined.
  • Add the flavor: Stir the Parmesan cheese, chopped sun-dried tomatoes, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes into the cream mixture. Keep the heat at medium-low and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often, until the Parmesan melts and the sauce begins to look creamy and slightly thickened.
  • Return the chicken: Add the browned chicken and any juices from the plate back into the skillet. Stir gently so the pieces are coated in the sauce. Taste the sauce at this point and add a little more salt or pepper if needed.
  • Top with cheese: Sprinkle the mozzarella evenly over the chicken and creamy sauce. Make sure the cheese reaches most of the surface so you get a nice melted layer across the casserole.
  • Bake the casserole: Transfer the oven-safe skillet to a preheated 375°F oven and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the chicken is completely cooked through and the sauce is bubbling around the edges. The chicken should reach 165°F in the thickest pieces.
  • Brown the top: If you want a more golden cheese topping, switch the oven to broil for the final 1 to 2 minutes. Watch it closely because the mozzarella can go from golden to burnt quickly under the broiler.
  • Finish and serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes. Sprinkle the fresh basil over the top just before serving. That short resting time gives the sauce a chance to settle and thicken slightly.

What to Serve Marry Me Chicken Casserole With

I like serving this casserole with something simple because the chicken and sauce already bring plenty of flavor. Roasted broccoli is one of my favorite choices because the slightly crisp edges of the broccoli work well with the creamy sauce. Green beans, asparagus, or roasted zucchini are also easy options.

For a more filling dinner, serve the casserole over pasta, rice, or mashed potatoes. The creamy sauce works especially well with something that can soak it up. A piece of crusty bread is another good choice if you want the easiest possible side.

A simple green salad can also balance the richness of the casserole. I usually keep the dressing light, with lemon or a simple vinaigrette, so the meal does not feel too heavy.

How to Store and Reheat Marry Me Chicken Casserole

Let the casserole cool before transferring it to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. If you’re making it ahead, you can also assemble it earlier in the day, cover it, refrigerate it, and bake it when you’re ready.

When reheating, use a skillet over medium-low heat and add a small splash of chicken broth or cream to loosen the sauce. Cover the skillet and heat gently until the chicken is warmed through. Avoid very high heat because creamy sauces can separate and become oily when overheated.

For a quick single serving, you can use the microwave. Heat it in short intervals, stirring between each one, until hot. If the sauce has thickened in the refrigerator, a tablespoon of broth or cream stirred in before reheating will help bring that creamy texture back.
