Chicken Tater Tot Casserole

September 7, 2026 by khadaraliadan Leave a Comment

Chicken Tater Tot Casserole has that combination I reach for when I want dinner to feel comforting without making a complicated meal. Creamy chicken and vegetables sit underneath a layer of crispy tater tots, so you get something soft and savory in the middle with golden crunch on top.

I usually make this when I have cooked chicken that needs a second life. Instead of reheating the same leftovers, I mix them with a creamy sauce, add some vegetables and cheese, and let the oven do the rest.

The tater tots are definitely the fun part. They turn golden on top while the creamy filling bubbles underneath, and getting a little crispy tot with the chicken filling makes every bite better.

It is also the sort of casserole that works well for a busy family dinner. You can assemble it earlier in the day, keep it chilled, and bake it when everyone is ready to eat.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

This casserole keeps things simple with chicken, creamy sauce, vegetables, cheese, and frozen tater tots. You do not need to make a separate topping or prepare complicated side dishes because the tater tots give the casserole its own hearty finish.

Using cooked chicken also saves time. Rotisserie chicken is an easy choice, but leftover roasted or baked chicken works just as well. The creamy sauce helps keep the chicken moist while it heats in the oven.

I also like the contrast in texture. The filling stays creamy and tender while the tater tots become crisp and golden. That combination is what makes this casserole feel more satisfying than a basic chicken bake.

Ingredients for Chicken Tater Tot Casserole

For the Creamy Chicken Filling

  • 2 cups cooked chicken: Shredded or chopped chicken gives the casserole its main protein. Two cups is enough to make the dish hearty without overwhelming the creamy filling.
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup: Creates the creamy base and helps hold the chicken and vegetables together while the casserole bakes.
  • 1/2 cup sour cream: Adds richness and a little tang, making the sauce creamier without needing a long list of ingredients.
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth: Loosens the soup and sour cream mixture so it spreads easily and stays creamy after baking.
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables: Adds peas, carrots, and other vegetables with almost no preparation. There is no need to thaw them first.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder: Adds a mild savory garlic flavor throughout the creamy filling.
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder: Gives the sauce extra onion flavor without needing to chop another onion.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper: Adds a little warmth and balances the creamy ingredients.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt: Seasons the filling, although you may need less depending on the saltiness of your soup and chicken.

For the Cheese and Tater Tots

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese: Adds a rich, cheesy layer that melts into the creamy chicken filling.
  • 1 bag frozen tater tots: The tater tots form the golden, crispy topping. Keep them frozen until you are ready to arrange them over the casserole.
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley: Adds a little fresh color and flavor at the end. It is optional but makes the finished casserole look brighter.

How to Make Chicken Tater Tot Casserole

  • Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F and allow it to fully heat while you prepare the casserole. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish so the creamy filling is easier to scoop out after baking.
  • Prepare the chicken mixture: Add the cooked chicken, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, chicken broth, frozen mixed vegetables, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt to a large mixing bowl. Stir everything together thoroughly until the chicken and vegetables are evenly coated in the creamy mixture.
  • Spread the filling: Pour the chicken mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Smooth the surface with the back of a spoon so the filling cooks evenly and the cheese can cover the chicken mixture properly.
  • Add the cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar evenly over the chicken filling. Try to cover most of the surface so the melted cheese becomes part of every serving rather than staying in only one area.
  • Arrange the tater tots: Take the frozen tater tots directly from the freezer and arrange them in a single layer over the cheese. Place them close together so the top is well covered, but avoid piling them on top of each other because they need direct heat to become crisp and golden.
  • Bake the casserole: Place the uncovered casserole in the preheated oven and bake for about 40 to 45 minutes. During this time, the creamy filling will heat through and begin bubbling while the tater tots cook and become golden.
  • Check the topping: Look at the tater tots toward the end of the baking time. They should be crisp and golden on the outside rather than pale and soft. If they need more color, continue baking for another 5 to 10 minutes while watching them closely.
  • Brown the tater tots further if needed: If your oven has not given the tots enough color, switch to broil for 1 to 2 minutes at the end. Stay near the oven and watch carefully because the tater tots can brown very quickly under the broiler.
  • Let the casserole rest: Remove the dish from the oven and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes before serving. This gives the creamy filling time to settle and makes it much easier to scoop without the sauce running everywhere.
  • Finish and serve: Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the top if using. Serve each portion with several crispy tater tots and plenty of the creamy chicken filling underneath.

What to Serve Chicken Tater Tot Casserole With

This casserole is already quite filling, so I like keeping the sides fresh and simple. A green salad with lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette gives you a crisp contrast to the creamy filling and crispy potatoes.

Steamed or roasted vegetables are another easy option. Green beans, broccoli, asparagus, or peas all work nicely without adding too much extra richness to the meal.

If you are feeding a family, you can also serve some sliced fruit on the side. Honestly, though, you do not need much. The chicken, vegetables, cheese, and tater tots make this a complete and satisfying dinner on their own.

How to Store and Reheat Chicken Tater Tot Casserole

Let the casserole cool before covering it and placing it in the refrigerator. Store leftovers in an airtight container or cover the baking dish tightly, and eat them within 3 to 4 days. The tater tots will soften as they sit because they absorb some moisture from the creamy filling.

For the best texture, reheat individual portions in a 350°F oven or toaster oven until the center is hot and the tater tots have crisped back up. This takes longer than the microwave, but it gives you a much better topping.

If you are in a hurry, the microwave works for individual portions. Heat in short intervals until the chicken filling is completely hot, but expect the tater tots to remain soft. If you want some of that original crunch back, finish the portion in an air fryer or oven for a few minutes.
