Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta

August 29, 2026 by kadr Leave a Comment

Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta starts with one of my favorite combinations: butter sizzling in a hot skillet with fresh garlic. Once the chicken goes in and starts browning, the kitchen already smells like dinner before the pasta even hits the pan.

There is nothing complicated happening here. The butter gives the chicken a rich flavor, garlic adds that familiar savory bite, and Parmesan brings everything together into a simple sauce that coats the pasta nicely.

I make this when I want something comforting but do not feel like making a heavy cream sauce. A little pasta water helps create a silky coating, so you can get a flavorful pasta dinner without needing a long list of ingredients.

The recipe is also easy to adjust depending on what is in your kitchen. Add spinach, broccoli, or a pinch of red pepper flakes, or leave everything out and let the garlic butter and Parmesan stay in the spotlight.

What Is Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta

Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta is a simple pasta dish made with tender chicken, garlic, butter, Parmesan, and pasta. Instead of a thick cream sauce, the butter and pasta water create a light, silky coating that clings to the noodles.

The chicken is browned first so it develops a flavorful crust. Garlic is then cooked gently in the same skillet, which means you get all those browned bits mixed into the sauce.

I like using Parmesan at the end because it adds saltiness and richness without making the pasta overly heavy.

Ingredients for Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta

For the Chicken and Pasta

  • Chicken breast: Use 1 large chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces.
  • Pasta: Use 8 ounces of spaghetti, fettuccine, penne, or another pasta you like.
  • Olive oil: Use 1 tablespoon for cooking the chicken.
  • Salt and black pepper: Season the chicken to taste.

For the Garlic Butter Sauce

  • Butter: Use 4 tablespoons for a rich garlic butter flavor.
  • Garlic: Use 4 cloves, minced.
  • Parmesan cheese: Use ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan.
  • Pasta water: Reserve about ½ cup before draining the pasta.
  • Italian seasoning: Use 1 teaspoon for a simple herb flavor.
  • Red pepper flakes: Optional if you want a little heat.
  • Fresh parsley: Optional for serving.

How to Make Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta

  • Cook the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta according to the package directions until al dente.
  • Reserve pasta water: Before draining, save about ½ cup of the pasta cooking water.
  • Season the chicken: Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces and season with salt and black pepper.
  • Brown the chicken: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and cooked through.
  • Set the chicken aside: Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate and keep it nearby.
  • Melt the butter: Reduce the skillet heat to medium and add the butter.
  • Cook the garlic: Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, stirring often. Do not let the garlic become dark or bitter.
  • Add the seasoning: Stir in the Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes if using.
  • Add the pasta: Add the drained pasta directly to the skillet and toss it through the garlic butter.
  • Add pasta water: Pour in a small splash of reserved pasta water and toss again. Add more as needed until the butter creates a smooth coating around the pasta.
  • Add Parmesan: Sprinkle in the Parmesan and toss until it melts into the sauce.
  • Return the chicken: Add the cooked chicken back to the skillet and gently toss everything together.
  • Taste and adjust: Add more salt, black pepper, Parmesan, or red pepper flakes if needed.
  • Finish the pasta: Sprinkle with fresh parsley and extra Parmesan if desired.
  • Serve: Serve immediately while the garlic butter sauce is warm and glossy.

What to Serve Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta

Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta has a rich, savory flavor, so I like serving it with something fresh to balance the butter. A simple green salad with lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette is an easy choice.

For vegetables, roasted broccoli, asparagus, or green beans all work well. You can also stir spinach directly into the pasta during the last minute of cooking if you want to add some greens without making another side dish.

Crusty bread is a natural match for garlic butter pasta. Toasted sourdough, a baguette, or a simple dinner roll can soak up any buttery sauce left on the plate.

When I am keeping dinner casual, I usually serve the pasta with a small salad and stop there. If you are making it for guests, a little fresh parsley and extra Parmesan on top makes each serving look finished without adding much work.

You can also serve a light tomato or cucumber salad on the side. The fresh, slightly acidic flavors help cut through the richness of the butter and Parmesan.

How to Store and Reheat

Store leftover Chicken Garlic Butter Pasta in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Let it cool slightly before storing, then refrigerate it promptly.

The pasta may absorb some of the butter as it sits, so it can look a little dry when chilled. Add a splash of water or chicken broth before reheating to help loosen everything.

Warm the pasta gently in a skillet over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally. A small pat of butter can also help bring back the buttery texture if the pasta looks dry.

For the microwave, heat individual portions in 30- to 60-second intervals, stirring between each one. Add a little liquid before heating if needed.

Avoid using high heat because the chicken can dry out and the Parmesan may become clumpy. Gentle reheating gives you a much better texture.

Before serving the leftovers, add a little fresh Parmesan, black pepper, or parsley. If you like more garlic flavor, a small amount of freshly minced garlic sautéed in butter can also be stirred through the reheated pasta.
