Canned Chicken Buffalo Dip

September 5, 2026 by kadr Leave a Comment

Canned Chicken Buffalo Dip is a handy recipe to keep around when I want something warm and cheesy without having to cook chicken first. Canned chicken makes the preparation quick, and once everything is mixed together, the oven does the rest.

I like using canned chicken here because it saves a step without taking away from the creamy buffalo flavor. The chicken blends into the dip nicely with cream cheese, ranch, buffalo sauce, and melted cheddar.

This is also one of those recipes where you can adjust things as you go. Add more buffalo sauce for extra heat or a little more ranch if you prefer a milder, creamier dip.

Serve it hot with tortilla chips, celery, carrots, crackers, or toasted bread. It is simple enough for a quick snack but works just as well for a party.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

The best part about this dip is how quick and convenient it is. There is no raw chicken to cook or shred because canned chicken is ready to use.

The cream cheese makes the dip rich and smooth, while buffalo sauce adds tangy heat. Ranch cools everything down, and cheddar gives you that melted, cheesy finish.

You can also prepare it ahead of time and bake it when you are ready to serve. That makes it a useful recipe when you are hosting and already have several things to prepare.

Ingredients for Canned Chicken Buffalo Dip

For the Dip

  • 2 cans canned chicken, about 10 ounces each – Drain the chicken well and break it into smaller pieces before mixing.
  • 8 ounces cream cheese – Softened cream cheese makes the dip easier to combine.
  • 1/2 cup buffalo sauce – Add more or less depending on how spicy you want the dip.
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing – Adds creaminess and balances the buffalo sauce.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese – Gives the dip a cheesy flavor and bubbly top.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder – Adds a little extra savory flavor.

For Topping

  • 2 tablespoons sliced green onions – Optional, but they add freshness and color.
  • 2 tablespoons shredded cheddar cheese – Optional if you want extra cheese on top.

For Serving

  • Tortilla chips – Easy for scooping the creamy dip.
  • Celery and carrot sticks – Add a fresh, crunchy contrast.
  • Crackers or toasted bread – Great alternatives for dipping.

How to Make Canned Chicken Buffalo Dip

  • Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a small baking dish. Let the oven heat completely while you prepare the dip so it can go straight into the oven once everything is mixed.
  • Drain the chicken: Open the canned chicken and drain it well, pressing out excess liquid if needed. Transfer it to a bowl and use a fork to break apart any large pieces so the chicken will spread evenly throughout the dip.
  • Soften the cream cheese: Let the cream cheese sit at room temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes before mixing if possible. Soft cream cheese blends much more easily with the buffalo sauce and ranch and helps prevent large lumps in the finished dip.
  • Mix the creamy base: Add the softened cream cheese, buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, and garlic powder to a large bowl. Stir everything together until the mixture is mostly smooth and the buffalo sauce has been evenly incorporated.
  • Add the chicken: Fold the drained canned chicken into the cream cheese mixture. Break up any remaining large pieces with your spoon as you mix so the chicken is evenly distributed rather than sitting in large chunks.
  • Add the cheese: Stir in about 3/4 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese, keeping the remaining cheese for the top. Mix thoroughly so the cheese is spread throughout the dip and every bite gets some of that cheesy flavor.
  • Transfer to the baking dish: Spoon the mixture into your prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese over the top so it melts into a golden, bubbly layer while the dip bakes.
  • Bake the dip: Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until the dip is hot throughout and the cheese has melted completely. If you want a more browned top, broil it for 1 to 2 minutes at the end while watching closely.
  • Let it rest: Remove the dip from the oven and let it sit for about 5 minutes before serving. This gives the mixture a chance to thicken slightly while keeping it warm and easy to scoop.
  • Finish and serve: Sprinkle sliced green onions over the top if you are using them. Serve the dip warm with tortilla chips, celery, carrots, crackers, or toasted bread, and keep extra buffalo sauce or ranch nearby for anyone who wants more flavor.

What to Serve Canned Chicken Buffalo Dip

I usually serve this dip with tortilla chips and fresh vegetables because the crunchy texture works so well with the creamy filling. Celery and carrots are especially good if you want something fresh next to the spicy buffalo flavor.

Crackers, pita chips, pretzels, and toasted baguette slices are also easy options. If you are serving a crowd, putting several dipping choices around the dish makes the appetizer feel more complete without adding much extra work.

For a bigger party spread, you can serve the dip alongside wings, sliders, fries, or a vegetable platter. Since the dip is already rich, I like keeping the other sides fairly simple.

How to Store and Reheat Canned Chicken Buffalo Dip

Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Let it cool slightly before covering and refrigerating it, and do not leave it sitting at room temperature for more than about 2 hours.

For a larger portion, reheat the dip in an oven-safe dish at 350°F until it is hot and bubbling around the edges. Smaller portions can be reheated in the microwave in short intervals, stirring between each one so the heat spreads evenly.

If the dip thickens after being refrigerated, stir in a little ranch dressing or buffalo sauce before reheating. This helps bring back the smooth, creamy consistency without making the dip watery.
