Marry Me Chicken Orzo

September 6, 2026 by kadr Leave a Comment

Marry Me Chicken Orzo brings tender chicken and creamy, Parmesan-rich orzo together in one skillet. I like this version because the orzo cooks right in the sauce, so it absorbs all those savory flavors instead of being cooked separately and added at the end.

The chicken gets browned first, which gives the dish a deeper flavor and leaves little golden bits in the pan. Once the broth goes in, those bits become part of the sauce.

Sun-dried tomatoes add their sweet and tangy flavor, while garlic, Parmesan, and Italian seasoning make the orzo taste rich and savory. The result is cozy enough for a weeknight but nice enough to put on the table when you’re having guests.

I usually serve it straight from the skillet while it’s still creamy. A little fresh basil on top is all it needs to finish.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

This is a one-skillet dinner, which means you don’t have to cook the chicken, pasta, and sauce in separate pans. The orzo cooks directly in the flavorful broth, making the whole dish easier and giving the pasta plenty of flavor.

The creamy texture comes from Parmesan and a small amount of heavy cream rather than a complicated sauce. The orzo naturally absorbs some of the liquid as it cooks, which helps create that thick, comforting consistency.

I also like how easy it is to adjust. Leave out the red pepper flakes for a mild dinner, add more for heat, or stir in a splash of broth at the end if you want the orzo a little looser.

Ingredients for Marry Me Chicken Orzo

For the Chicken

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts: Two chicken breasts are enough to give you plenty of chicken without overpowering the orzo. Cut them into bite-sized pieces so they cook quickly and are easy to eat with the small pasta.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning: This gives the chicken a simple blend of herbs and adds flavor without requiring several different dried seasonings.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt: Salt brings out the natural flavor of the chicken and seasons it before it goes into the skillet. A moderate amount is enough because Parmesan and chicken broth will add more seasoning later.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper: Pepper adds a little warmth and keeps the chicken from tasting bland against the creamy sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil: Olive oil helps brown the chicken and creates the golden bits on the bottom of the skillet that add extra flavor to the sauce.

For the Orzo and Sauce

  • 1 cup orzo: Orzo looks like rice but is actually a small pasta. It cooks quickly and absorbs the broth as it simmers, making it ideal for creating a creamy one-pan meal.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced: Garlic gives the dish its savory foundation. Cooking it briefly in the same skillet after the chicken allows it to pick up some of the browned flavors left in the pan.
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth: Chicken broth provides the main cooking liquid for the orzo and adds savory flavor. Since the pasta cooks directly in it, the broth becomes part of the finished sauce rather than being drained away.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream: Heavy cream adds richness and gives the finished orzo a smooth, creamy texture. It works together with the starch released from the orzo to create a thick sauce.
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese: Parmesan adds a salty, nutty flavor and helps make the sauce thicker and creamier as it melts into the hot orzo.
  • 1/3 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes: Sun-dried tomatoes add concentrated tomato flavor with a little sweetness and tang. Chopping them into small pieces helps spread their flavor throughout the orzo.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning: This adds another layer of herb flavor to the creamy sauce and ties the chicken, tomatoes, and Parmesan together.
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes: These are optional and give the dish a mild kick. You can leave them out if you prefer a gentle, creamy flavor.

For Finishing

  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil: Fresh basil adds a bright, fresh herb flavor that balances the richness of the Parmesan and cream. It is optional but makes a nice finishing touch.
  • 1/4 cup extra chicken broth, if needed: Keep a little extra broth nearby in case the orzo becomes thicker than you like while cooking or after it sits for a few minutes.

How to Make Marry Me Chicken Orzo

  • Prepare the chicken: Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels and cut them into small, even bite-sized pieces. Season the chicken with salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning, making sure the seasoning is spread over all the pieces so every bite has some flavor.
  • Brown the chicken: Heat the olive oil in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken in a single layer and cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pieces are golden on the outside and cooked through. If the skillet is crowded, work in batches so the chicken has enough space to brown instead of steaming. Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate.
  • Cook the garlic: Reduce the heat to medium and add the minced garlic to the same skillet. Stir for about 30 seconds, allowing the garlic to become fragrant while picking up the flavorful bits left from the chicken. Be careful not to let it brown too much.
  • Toast the orzo briefly: Add the dry orzo to the skillet and stir it with the garlic and remaining pan juices for about 1 minute. This small step gives the pasta a slightly toasted flavor and helps coat it with the savory flavors already in the pan.
  • Add the broth: Pour the chicken broth into the skillet and stir well, scraping the bottom of the pan to loosen any browned pieces. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and make sure the orzo is spread evenly across the skillet.
  • Cook the orzo: Let the orzo simmer for about 8 to 10 minutes, stirring every minute or so to prevent it from sticking to the bottom. The pasta should gradually absorb the broth and become tender. If the liquid disappears too quickly before the orzo is cooked, add a small splash of extra broth.
  • Add the cream and flavorings: Once the orzo is nearly tender, stir in the heavy cream, Parmesan cheese, chopped sun-dried tomatoes, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes if using. Keep the heat at medium-low and stir for another 2 to 3 minutes so the Parmesan melts and the sauce becomes creamy.
  • Return the chicken: Add the cooked chicken back to the skillet and stir it through the creamy orzo. Let everything cook together for another 2 to 3 minutes so the chicken warms through and the flavors have time to combine.
  • Check the consistency: Look at the orzo as it cooks because it will continue absorbing liquid even after you turn off the heat. If it looks too thick, stir in a tablespoon or two of the extra chicken broth until it reaches a creamy, spoonable consistency.
  • Taste and adjust: Taste the orzo and add more salt, black pepper, or red pepper flakes if needed. Go slowly with the salt because the Parmesan and broth already contribute some saltiness.
  • Finish with basil: Turn off the heat and stir in the fresh basil or scatter it over the top. Let the skillet rest for about 2 minutes before serving so the sauce can settle while the orzo finishes absorbing the flavors.
  • Serve warm: Spoon the creamy orzo into bowls and make sure each serving gets chicken and plenty of sun-dried tomatoes. Add a little extra Parmesan and basil on top if you like.

What to Serve Marry Me Chicken Orzo With

This dish is filling enough to stand on its own, so I usually keep the sides light. A simple green salad with a fresh vinaigrette adds some crispness and balances the creamy orzo.

Roasted broccoli, asparagus, or green beans also work well. The vegetables bring a little color and freshness without taking attention away from the chicken and creamy Parmesan sauce.

If you’re serving this for a larger dinner, crusty bread is a good addition. Warm bread gives you something to scoop through any extra creamy sauce left in the skillet.

How to Store and Reheat Marry Me Chicken Orzo

Store leftover Marry Me Chicken Orzo in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Because orzo continues absorbing liquid as it sits, don’t be surprised if the leftovers look much thicker the next day.

For reheating, place the orzo in a skillet over low to medium heat and add a splash of chicken broth or cream. Stir gently as it warms and continue adding small amounts of liquid until the sauce becomes creamy again. Avoid high heat because the cream and Parmesan sauce can become too thick or separate.

You can also microwave individual portions in short intervals, stirring between each one. Adding a little broth before reheating helps prevent the orzo from becoming dry while bringing back some of its original creamy texture.
