Hot Sauce Chicken Dip

September 5, 2026 by kadr Leave a Comment

Hot Sauce Chicken Dip is a great way to turn a few simple ingredients into something warm, creamy, and full of flavor. I usually make it when I have cooked chicken to use up and want something more interesting than another sandwich or salad.

The hot sauce gives the dip a sharp, spicy kick, while cream cheese and cheddar mellow everything out. A little ranch dressing brings in a cool, tangy flavor that keeps the heat from becoming too strong.

What I like most is that you can change the heat without changing the recipe. Start with a small amount of hot sauce, taste the mixture, and add more until it tastes right for you.

Bake it until the cheese is melted and bubbling, then put it on the table with plenty of things to scoop it up. It is especially good while it is still warm and creamy.

What Is Hot Sauce Chicken Dip

Hot sauce chicken dip is a creamy appetizer made with shredded chicken, hot sauce, cream cheese, ranch dressing, and cheddar cheese. The ingredients are mixed together and baked until hot and bubbly.

Unlike a dip made with a thick bottled buffalo sauce, using hot sauce lets you control the flavor and heat more easily. You can make it mild, medium, or very spicy depending on how much you add.

It is also a practical recipe for leftover chicken. You can use cooked chicken breast, rotisserie chicken, or any plain cooked chicken you already have in the refrigerator.

Ingredients for Hot Sauce Chicken Dip

For the Dip

  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken – Use leftover chicken or rotisserie chicken and shred it into small pieces.
  • 8 ounces cream cheese – Softened so it mixes smoothly with the other ingredients.
  • 1/2 cup hot sauce – Use your favorite hot sauce and adjust the amount for your preferred heat level.
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing – Adds creaminess and helps balance the hot sauce.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese – Makes the dip cheesy and gives the top a nice melted finish.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder – Adds a simple savory flavor.

For Serving

  • Celery and carrot sticks – Fresh and crunchy options for dipping.
  • Tortilla chips or crackers – Great for scooping up the creamy dip.
  • Toasted bread – A good choice when you want something more filling.

How to Make Hot Sauce Chicken Dip

  • Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a small baking dish. Give the oven time to heat while you prepare the dip so everything can go straight into the oven once it is mixed.
  • Prepare the chicken: Place the cooked chicken in a large bowl and shred it into small, bite-sized pieces. If you are using rotisserie chicken, remove the skin and bones first, then make sure there are no large chunks that could make the dip difficult to scoop.
  • Soften the cream cheese: Allow the cream cheese to sit at room temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes before mixing. Once softened, stir it with a spoon until it is smooth and easy to combine with the other ingredients.
  • Mix the creamy base: Add the hot sauce, ranch dressing, and garlic powder to the softened cream cheese. Stir thoroughly until the hot sauce is evenly blended and the mixture looks smooth, with no large pieces of cream cheese remaining.
  • Add the chicken: Fold the shredded chicken into the sauce mixture and stir until every piece is coated. Breaking up any larger pieces as you mix will help the chicken spread evenly throughout the dip.
  • Add the cheese: Stir in about 3/4 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese, saving the remaining cheese for the top. Mix gently until the cheese is distributed throughout the chicken mixture.
  • Taste and adjust: Before baking, taste a small amount of the mixture and decide if you want more heat. If needed, add another tablespoon or two of hot sauce and mix again until the flavor is where you want it.
  • Transfer to the baking dish: Spoon the chicken mixture into the prepared dish and spread it into an even layer. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese over the top so it melts into a golden, cheesy layer as the dip bakes.
  • Bake the dip: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the center is hot and the cheese has melted completely. If you want a slightly browned top, switch the oven to broil for the final 1 to 2 minutes, watching closely so the cheese does not burn.
  • Let it rest: Remove the dip from the oven and allow it to rest for about 5 minutes before serving. This gives the creamy mixture a chance to settle while keeping it warm enough for easy scooping.
  • Serve warm: Sprinkle a little extra hot sauce over the top if you like more heat, then serve the dip with celery, carrots, tortilla chips, crackers, or toasted bread. Try to serve it while it is still warm and creamy, when the cheese has the best texture.

What to Serve Hot Sauce Chicken Dip

I like serving this dip with celery and carrot sticks because their fresh crunch balances the creamy, spicy chicken mixture. Bell pepper strips and cucumber slices are also good choices if you want more vegetables on the platter.

For something salty and crunchy, use tortilla chips, crackers, pita chips, or pretzels. Toasted baguette slices are another good option, especially if you are serving the dip as part of a larger appetizer spread.

If you are making this for a party, put several dipping options around the baking dish. I usually keep extra ranch nearby as well because it gives anyone who finds the hot sauce too spicy an easy way to cool things down.

How to Store and Reheat Hot Sauce Chicken Dip

Store leftover hot sauce chicken dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Let the dip cool slightly before covering it and refrigerating it, and avoid leaving it at room temperature for more than about 2 hours.

For the best results, reheat the dip in an oven-safe dish at 350°F until it is hot and bubbling around the edges. Smaller portions can be reheated in the microwave in short intervals, stirring between each one to help the dip heat evenly.

If the dip becomes thick after chilling, stir in a small spoonful of ranch dressing or hot sauce before reheating. This helps restore the smooth, creamy consistency without watering down the flavor.
