Creamy Marry Me Chicken

September 6, 2026 by kadr Leave a Comment

Creamy Marry Me Chicken starts with simple chicken breasts and ends with a skillet full of creamy, savory sauce. I make this when I want an ordinary chicken dinner to feel a little more special without needing a complicated recipe or a long list of ingredients.

What really makes the dish work is the sauce. The chicken is browned first, then the same pan is used to build a sauce with garlic, chicken broth, cream, Parmesan, and sun-dried tomatoes. Those browned bits left in the skillet become part of the sauce, which is where a lot of the flavor comes from.

I also like that you can make this meal your own. A little red pepper gives it heat, extra Parmesan makes the sauce richer, and fresh basil at the end adds a nice contrast to the creamy base.

Serve it with pasta, mashed potatoes, rice, or some crusty bread, and you have a comforting dinner that feels like something you would order at a nice restaurant.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

This recipe keeps the cooking simple while giving you plenty of flavor. You only need one skillet, and most of the work happens after the chicken has been browned.

The creamy Parmesan sauce is rich without being difficult to make. Heavy cream gives it body, Parmesan adds saltiness and depth, while chicken broth keeps the sauce from becoming too heavy.

Sun-dried tomatoes are another important part of the recipe. Their slightly sweet and tangy flavor cuts through the richness of the cream and gives the dish its signature taste.

The ingredients are also easy to adjust. You can leave out the red pepper flakes if you don’t like heat, add extra Parmesan for a thicker sauce, or stir in a little more broth if the sauce gets too thick.

Ingredients for Creamy Marry Me Chicken

For the Chicken

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts: Two large chicken breasts are enough for a satisfying meal. If they are thick, slice each one horizontally into two thinner pieces so they cook evenly and don’t take too long in the skillet. The chicken is the main protein, so browning it well gives the finished dish a much deeper flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning: This gives the chicken a simple combination of dried herbs such as oregano and basil. It seasons the meat before it goes into the skillet and also helps connect the chicken with the flavors in the creamy sauce.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt: Salt brings out the natural flavor of the chicken and keeps the finished dish from tasting flat. Seasoning the chicken before cooking is important because the flavor gets into the meat rather than only sitting on the surface.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper: Black pepper adds mild warmth and balances the richness of the cream and Parmesan. You can use a little more if you prefer a stronger pepper flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil: Olive oil is used to brown the chicken and helps create the golden crust on the outside. Those browned pieces also leave flavorful bits in the skillet that become part of the sauce later.

For the Creamy Sauce

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced: Garlic creates the savory base of the sauce. It only needs a short time in the skillet, and cooking it until fragrant releases its flavor without making it bitter or burnt.
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth: Chicken broth adds moisture and extra savory flavor to the sauce. It also helps loosen the browned bits stuck to the bottom of the skillet after cooking the chicken, so you don’t lose that flavor.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream: Heavy cream gives the sauce its smooth, rich texture. It also helps create a sauce that coats the chicken and whatever you serve alongside it instead of staying thin and watery.
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese: Parmesan adds a salty, nutty flavor and helps thicken the sauce as it melts. Freshly grated Parmesan tends to melt more smoothly, but pre-grated Parmesan can also work if that is what you have.
  • 1/3 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes: Sun-dried tomatoes bring sweetness, tanginess, and a concentrated tomato flavor to the creamy sauce. Chopping them into small pieces helps spread their flavor throughout the dish so you get some in almost every bite.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning: Adding a little more Italian seasoning to the sauce brings the herb flavor through the entire dish instead of keeping it only on the chicken.
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes: These are optional and add a gentle kick to balance the richness of the sauce. You can leave them out completely or add more if you enjoy spicy food.
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil: Fresh basil is optional, but it adds a fresh, slightly sweet herb flavor that works especially well with the Parmesan, cream, and sun-dried tomatoes. Add it at the end so its flavor stays fresh.

How to Make Creamy Marry Me Chicken

  • Prepare the chicken: Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels, then slice each breast horizontally into two thinner pieces if they are thick. Season both sides evenly with salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. Drying the chicken first helps it brown better instead of releasing too much moisture into the skillet.
  • Heat the skillet and oil: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Let the oil heat for a minute or two until it is hot but not smoking. Starting with a properly heated skillet helps the chicken develop a golden-brown surface.
  • Brown the chicken: Place the seasoned chicken into the hot skillet in a single layer. Cook for about 4 to 5 minutes on the first side without moving it too much, then flip and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. The chicken should be golden on the outside and cooked through. Once done, transfer it to a plate and keep it nearby while you make the sauce.
  • Cook the garlic: Reduce the heat to medium and add the minced garlic to the same skillet. Stir it constantly for about 30 seconds, just until it becomes fragrant. You don’t want the garlic to turn dark because burnt garlic can make the entire sauce taste bitter.
  • Add the chicken broth: Pour the chicken broth into the skillet and immediately use a wooden spoon or spatula to scrape the browned bits from the bottom. These pieces may look small, but they contain a lot of flavor from the chicken and seasoning, so work them into the broth as it simmers.
  • Build the creamy sauce: Pour in the heavy cream and add the Parmesan, sun-dried tomatoes, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir everything together and let the mixture gently simmer for about 3 to 5 minutes. The sauce should begin to look creamy and slightly thicker as the Parmesan melts into it.
  • Return the chicken to the sauce: Place the browned chicken back into the skillet and spoon some of the creamy sauce over each piece. Let everything simmer gently for another 3 to 5 minutes so the chicken warms through and the sauce has time to cling to the meat.
  • Check the consistency: Look at the sauce before serving. If it is thicker than you want, add a small splash of chicken broth or cream and stir it in. If it still seems too thin, let it simmer for another minute or two so some of the liquid can reduce naturally.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning: Taste a little of the sauce and add more salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes if needed. Remember that Parmesan and chicken broth already contain salt, so it is better to add a little at a time rather than too much at once.
  • Finish with basil: Turn off the heat and scatter the fresh basil over the chicken and sauce. Let the skillet sit for a minute before serving so the flavors come together and the sauce settles around the chicken.

What to Serve Creamy Marry Me Chicken With

I like serving this chicken with pasta because the creamy sauce coats the noodles and turns the dish into a complete meal. Short pasta such as penne or rigatoni works especially well, but you can use whatever you already have in the pantry.

Mashed potatoes are another great choice when you want something extra comforting. The potatoes soak up the Parmesan cream sauce beautifully. Rice works too and is an easy option when you want to keep the meal simple.

For something fresh on the side, serve the chicken with roasted broccoli, green beans, asparagus, or a simple green salad. And if you have some crusty bread, keep it nearby because you will probably want to scoop up every bit of the sauce.

How to Store and Reheat Creamy Marry Me Chicken

Store leftover Creamy Marry Me Chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Keep as much sauce around the chicken as possible because it helps prevent the meat from drying out while it is stored.

For the best texture, reheat the chicken gently in a skillet over low to medium heat. Add a small splash of chicken broth or cream to loosen the sauce, cover the skillet, and warm everything until the chicken is heated through. Avoid very high heat because cream-based sauces can become too thick or separate.

You can also reheat an individual portion in the microwave. Heat it in short intervals, stirring the sauce between intervals when possible. If the sauce looks thick after refrigeration, a splash of broth or cream will usually bring it back to a smoother consistency.
