Chicken Tenderloin Dinner

September 7, 2026 by khadaraliadan Leave a Comment

Chicken Tenderloin Dinner is what I turn to when I need a proper meal without spending the whole evening in the kitchen. Chicken tenderloins cook quickly, and because they are small and naturally tender, there is no need to spend much time preparing them.

I usually brown the chicken first so the outside gets a little color before adding the sauce. That quick step makes a big difference because those browned bits left in the skillet become part of the sauce.

The sauce is creamy, garlicky, and just rich enough without being too heavy. I like keeping the seasoning simple so the chicken still tastes like chicken instead of being covered up by too many flavors.

Serve it with rice, mashed potatoes, or vegetables, and you have a complete dinner that feels comforting but is still easy enough for a busy weeknight.

What Is Chicken Tenderloin Dinner

Chicken Tenderloin Dinner is a simple meal built around tender chicken tenderloins cooked in a skillet with a creamy garlic sauce. The tenderloins are seasoned and browned first, then finished gently in the sauce so they stay juicy.

Chicken tenderloins are smaller than regular chicken breasts and cook much faster. That makes them especially useful when you want dinner on the table quickly without cutting large chicken breasts into pieces.

The creamy sauce also gives you something to spoon over your side dish. I especially like it with mashed potatoes because they soak up every bit of the sauce.

Ingredients for Chicken Tenderloin Dinner

For the Chicken

  • 1 pound chicken tenderloins: Chicken tenderloins are naturally tender and cook quickly, making them perfect for this dinner. If your tenderloins are different sizes, try to choose pieces that are fairly similar so they finish cooking at about the same time.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt: Seasons the chicken and brings out its natural flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper: Adds a simple peppery flavor that works well with the creamy sauce.
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika: Gives the chicken a little color and a mild, slightly sweet flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil: Helps the tenderloins brown nicely in the skillet without sticking.

For the Creamy Garlic Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter: Adds richness to the sauce and helps carry the garlic flavor.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced: Fresh garlic gives the sauce its main savory flavor. Mince it finely so it cooks evenly without leaving large pieces.
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour: Helps thicken the sauce so it coats the chicken instead of staying watery.
  • 1 cup chicken broth: Adds savory flavor and provides the liquid base for the sauce.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream: Makes the sauce creamy and smooth without requiring a large amount.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning: Adds a gentle mix of herbs that works well with the chicken and garlic.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt: Adds additional seasoning to the sauce, but taste before adding it because the chicken broth may already contain salt.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper: Adds a little more warmth and balances the creaminess.
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese: Adds salty, savory flavor and helps the sauce become slightly thicker as it melts.

For Finishing

  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley: Adds a fresh flavor and bright color to the finished dish. It is optional, but I like using it when I have some available.
  • Extra Parmesan: Optional for sprinkling over the chicken just before serving.

How to Make Chicken Tenderloin Dinner

  • Prepare the chicken: Pat the chicken tenderloins dry with paper towels so they brown properly. Season both sides with salt, black pepper, and paprika, making sure the seasoning is spread evenly over each piece.
  • Heat the skillet: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Let the oil heat for about 1 minute before adding the chicken. The pan should be hot enough that the tenderloins begin to sizzle as soon as they touch it.
  • Brown the tenderloins: Arrange the chicken in a single layer without overcrowding the pan. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes on the first side, then turn each piece and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes. The chicken should be nicely browned on the outside but does not need to be completely cooked yet because it will finish in the sauce.
  • Set the chicken aside: Transfer the browned tenderloins to a clean plate and keep them nearby. Do not wipe out the skillet because the browned bits left on the bottom will add flavor to the creamy sauce.
  • Melt the butter: Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter to the same skillet. Let it melt completely, then use a wooden spoon or spatula to loosen some of the browned pieces from the bottom of the pan.
  • Cook the garlic: Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, stirring constantly. The garlic should become fragrant but should not turn dark brown because burnt garlic can make the sauce bitter.
  • Add the flour: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the butter and garlic, then stir continuously for about 30 seconds. This creates a simple base that will help thicken the sauce once the broth and cream are added.
  • Add the broth: Slowly pour in the chicken broth while whisking or stirring continuously. Scrape the bottom of the skillet as you stir so the flavorful browned bits become incorporated into the sauce rather than staying stuck to the pan.
  • Add the cream and seasoning: Pour in the heavy cream and add the Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together and let the sauce come to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.
  • Thicken the sauce: Allow the sauce to simmer gently for about 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. It should begin to look creamy and slightly thicker, but do not let it boil aggressively because the cream can separate.
  • Add the Parmesan: Stir the grated Parmesan into the warm sauce and continue stirring until the cheese has melted completely. The sauce should now be smooth, creamy, and thick enough to lightly coat a spoon.
  • Return the chicken: Place the browned chicken tenderloins back into the skillet and spoon the sauce over the top. Arrange the pieces in a single layer as much as possible so each tenderloin has plenty of contact with the warm sauce.
  • Finish cooking the chicken: Cover the skillet and let the chicken simmer gently for about 4 to 6 minutes, depending on the thickness of the tenderloins. Turn the pieces once and spoon the sauce over them again while they cook.
  • Check the temperature: Use a meat thermometer to check the thickest part of the chicken. The tenderloins should reach 165°F before serving. Avoid cooking them much longer than necessary because tenderloins are lean and can dry out when overcooked.
  • Adjust the sauce: If the sauce becomes thicker than you want, stir in a small splash of chicken broth or cream until it reaches the consistency you like. If it seems too thin, let it simmer uncovered for another minute or two while stirring gently.
  • Finish the dish: Turn off the heat and sprinkle the chicken with fresh parsley and a little extra Parmesan if desired. Let everything sit in the skillet for about 2 minutes so the sauce can settle onto the chicken.
  • Serve warm: Spoon the creamy sauce over the chicken and serve immediately with your chosen side. Make sure you get some of the sauce on the rice, potatoes, or vegetables because that is where a lot of the flavor ends up.

What to Serve Chicken Tenderloin Dinner With

I like serving this chicken with mashed potatoes, white rice, or egg noodles because they give you something to soak up the creamy garlic sauce. If you want a lighter option, roasted potatoes or cauliflower rice also work nicely.

For vegetables, steamed broccoli, green beans, asparagus, or roasted carrots are easy choices. Something green adds freshness and balances the richness of the sauce.

A simple side salad is another good option if you do not want to prepare another hot side. You really do not need much because the chicken and creamy sauce already make the meal filling.

How to Store and Reheat Chicken Tenderloin Dinner

Store leftover chicken and sauce together in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Keeping the chicken in the sauce helps prevent the tenderloins from drying out while they sit in the refrigerator.

When reheating, use a skillet over medium-low heat and add a small splash of chicken broth or cream to loosen the sauce. Cover the skillet and warm the chicken gently, turning the pieces once or twice so they heat evenly without becoming tough.

You can also microwave individual portions. Place the chicken and sauce in a microwave-safe dish, cover loosely, and heat in short intervals until warmed through. Stir the sauce between intervals and add a little broth or cream if it has become too thick.
