Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

September 8, 2026 by khadaraliadan Leave a Comment

Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Casserole brings that familiar sandwich-shop combination of chicken, peppers, onions, and melted cheese straight into a baking dish. Instead of dealing with individual sandwiches, everything cooks together into a warm, cheesy casserole that is easy to scoop and serve.

I like the way the vegetables become soft and slightly sweet while the chicken picks up all the savory flavor from the skillet. Then you add the cheese, and suddenly a simple chicken dinner feels much more satisfying.

There is no need for a complicated sauce here. A little cream cheese helps everything hold together, while mozzarella and provolone melt over the top and give the casserole that classic cheesesteak finish.

When I make this for dinner, I usually serve it with something fresh on the side and call it done. It is filling enough that you don’t need a lot of extras.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

The best thing about this casserole is that it gives you the flavors of a Philly cheesesteak without the work of assembling sandwiches one at a time. The chicken is cooked with onions and peppers, so the vegetables become part of the filling instead of just sitting on top.

The cheese is another reason this one works so well. Provolone gives you that familiar cheesesteak flavor, while mozzarella melts beautifully and adds plenty of stretch. Cream cheese brings everything together without requiring a separate complicated sauce.

I also find this recipe easy to adjust. You can use green peppers, red peppers, or a combination, add mushrooms if you like them on a cheesesteak, or use more provolone for a stronger cheese flavor.

What Is Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Casserole?

Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Casserole is a baked dish inspired by the classic Philly cheesesteak. Instead of thinly sliced beef, it uses bite-size chicken cooked with onions and bell peppers, then combines everything with a creamy cheese mixture and a melted cheese topping.

The result is savory, cheesy, and comforting, with the sweet peppers and onions giving the chicken plenty of flavor. It can be served on its own or with rice, potatoes, salad, or crusty bread.

Ingredients for Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

For the Chicken and Vegetables

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast: Chicken breast keeps the casserole lean while giving you plenty of tender pieces. Cut it into small bite-size pieces so it cooks quickly and mixes easily with the vegetables.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil: Olive oil helps brown the chicken and gives the vegetables enough fat to cook without sticking.
  • 1 small onion, sliced: Onion adds sweetness and the savory flavor you expect from a cheesesteak. Slice it thinly so it softens well in the skillet.
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced: Green pepper gives the casserole the classic Philly-style vegetable flavor and adds a little freshness.
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced: Red pepper brings a natural sweetness and adds another color to the casserole. You can use another green pepper if you prefer.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt: Salt seasons the chicken and vegetables, but keep the amount moderate because the cheeses add plenty of salt.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper: Pepper adds a little warmth and brings out the savory flavors.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder: Garlic gives the chicken mixture more depth without making the seasoning complicated.

For the Creamy Filling

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened: Cream cheese creates a smooth, creamy coating for the chicken and vegetables. Softening it first makes it much easier to mix.
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth: Chicken broth loosens the cream cheese and adds savory flavor to the filling.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce: Worcestershire sauce adds a deeper savory flavor that works especially well with the onions, peppers, and chicken.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning: A small amount of Italian seasoning adds herbs without taking the dish too far away from its cheesesteak-inspired flavor.

For the Cheese Topping

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese: Mozzarella melts smoothly and gives the casserole a gooey topping.
  • 1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese: Provolone provides the distinctive cheese flavor associated with a Philly cheesesteak.
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese: Parmesan adds a stronger savory note and helps the cheese topping develop more flavor as it bakes.

How to Make Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

  • Preheat the oven: Heat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease an 8×8-inch or similar-sized baking dish. Having the dish ready before you start cooking makes it easy to transfer the hot filling straight into the oven.
  • Prepare the chicken: Trim the chicken breasts and cut them into small, even bite-size pieces. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels before seasoning because removing excess moisture helps it brown better in the skillet.
  • Season the chicken: Place the chicken in a bowl and toss it with the salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Make sure the seasoning is spread evenly over the pieces rather than concentrated in one area.
  • Brown the chicken: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken in a single layer and cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pieces are golden on the outside and cooked through. Transfer the chicken to a plate once it reaches 165°F.
  • Cook the onions and peppers: Keep the same skillet over medium heat and add the sliced onion and bell peppers. Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften and the onions become lightly golden. The browned bits left from the chicken will add extra flavor as the vegetables cook.
  • Make the creamy mixture: Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the softened cream cheese and chicken broth to the skillet. Stir continuously until the cream cheese melts into the broth and creates a smooth, creamy sauce.
  • Season the sauce: Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and Italian seasoning. Let the mixture simmer gently for about 1 to 2 minutes so the flavors combine and the sauce becomes slightly thicker.
  • Return the chicken: Add the cooked chicken back to the skillet with the vegetables and creamy sauce. Stir gently until the chicken and vegetables are evenly coated and everything is well combined.
  • Transfer to the baking dish: Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Smooth the surface so the cheese topping can cover the casserole evenly.
  • Add the cheese: Sprinkle the mozzarella and provolone over the chicken mixture, then finish with the Parmesan. Try to distribute the cheeses evenly so every serving gets a good amount of melted topping.
  • Bake the casserole: Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the filling is hot and bubbling and the cheese has completely melted. The edges should be gently bubbling by the time it is ready.
  • Brown the cheese if desired: If you want a deeper golden color, switch the oven to broil for the final 1 to 2 minutes. Watch the casserole closely during this step because the cheese can brown quickly.
  • Let it rest: Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to rest for about 5 minutes before serving. This gives the creamy filling a little time to settle and makes it easier to scoop without the sauce running immediately across the plate.
  • Serve warm: Spoon the chicken, vegetables, creamy sauce, and melted cheese onto plates. Make sure you get plenty of the browned cheese from the top with each serving.

What to Serve Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Casserole With

This casserole is filling enough to serve by itself, but I like adding a simple side to make the meal feel complete. A crisp green salad works particularly well because the fresh vegetables and light dressing balance the rich cheese and creamy chicken. Steamed broccoli, green beans, or roasted zucchini are also easy choices when you want to add more vegetables.

If you’re looking for something more substantial, serve the casserole over white rice or mashed potatoes. Both are good at catching the creamy sauce from the bottom of the baking dish. Roasted potatoes would work too if you prefer a little more texture.

You can also lean into the cheesesteak idea and serve the casserole with toasted hoagie rolls. Spoon some of the hot chicken and cheesy filling into the bread and let the edges get a little messy. A side of roasted vegetables or a simple salad is enough to finish that kind of meal.

How to Store and Reheat Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

Allow leftover casserole to cool slightly, then transfer it to an airtight container or cover the baking dish tightly before refrigerating. It will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. If you know you will have leftovers, I recommend keeping them with the creamy sauce rather than separating anything because the sauce helps prevent the chicken from drying out.

For the best texture, reheat the casserole in a 350°F oven. Place the portion in an oven-safe dish, cover it loosely with foil, and heat for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the center is hot. Remove the foil during the last few minutes if you want the cheese on top to become bubbly again. If the filling looks dry, add a small splash of chicken broth before reheating.

For a single serving, the microwave is quicker. Cover the portion loosely and heat in 30 to 60-second intervals, stirring the filling gently between intervals when possible. The cheese will not have quite the same golden texture as when freshly baked, but the casserole will still be creamy and flavorful. If you want to freshen it up, add a little freshly shredded provolone or mozzarella before reheating.
